On Friday, March 1st, 2024, NYC’s dynamic, up-and-coming piano trio On a Limb, noted for their “mesmerizing virtuosity” and “telepathic improvisational skills” (CityBeat) will unveil their third full-length studio album “When the Skies Parted,” self-released under Honestly Records.
“When the Skies Parted” features 6 new original compositions, 5 written by pianist and bandleader Andrew Haug and 1 written by bassist Ethan Marsh. It reflects a time of intense transition, emotional vulnerability, and new beginnings. Haug dives deeper on how the album came to be:
“When the pandemic struck in 2020, the band was based in our hometown of Cincinnati, OH. At the end of 2020, drummer Charlie Schefft’s father passed away. A drummer himself, he taught Charlie at an early age and had a profound impact on his personal and musical growth. In early 2021, I was experiencing personal tragedy, pain, and loss. For a lot of us, it was an extremely challenging period that ultimately led to new growth. Ethan joined the band and we started rehearsing often at Hoffner Park, staying outside to reduce the risk of spreading covid. We had tons of free time on our hands still with the pandemic canceling most of our work, but with vaccinations around the corner, we were slowly getting back to our usual performing schedules. Ethan immediately fit in like a glove and I already knew a new album was brewing. I have vivid memories of coming to the park one day, bringing in brand new tunes I had just written like ‘Into the River’ and ‘Cut to the Chase.’ There was something that I felt by simply looking into their eyes; it felt like it ‘was time’. Without having to say much at all, we knew we were embarking on a new journey in life and needed a fresh start. We started making plans to move to New York City.”
Fast-forward to January of 2023, and On a Limb took a four-day get-away trip to Firehouse 12 in New Haven, CT to record the album. On a Limb explores each song to its fullest extent - having a strong compass of what they want to express, while allowing room for new possibilities to continually emerge. Haug and Marsh are showcased with their atmospheric vocal textures on the opening track, “Know What You Know,” immediately creating an intense, beautiful, and meditative sonic space to start the album. Guitar (Marsh), keyboards and synthesizers (Haug) add another layer of richness to their single, “Tried to Leave My Demons in Otis,” as it winds through an extended and emotive form. Legendary producer Dave Darlington mixed and mastered the record, fully bringing “When the Skies Parted” to life.
